Seasonal News + Events for Slow Food Chefs & Members

ISSUE 39, May/june '22

On the Menu

It's that time of year, the end of the school year and time to already think about prepping for next year's school gardens.

That's right, it's never to early to apply for a Grant for a School Garden. The applications are available at our website:https://www.slowfoodmiami.org/apply-for-a-grant.

Of course it's also that time of year for our SOA Committee members who are busy vetting all your Snail of Approval '22 Nominees for Chef, Restaurant, Purveyor, and Farms. Thank you for your submissions.

Drum roll........

While the winners will not be traditionally honored at our Freshest Night Out Event, we will share who the winners are in our Summer Newsletter edition July/August and at our website where you can find the names of all our previous recipients.

It's also that time of year that you can take a trip to our local farms and farmers markets and pick up the most beautiful tropical fruits. One of those visits on your list should include Mango Men of Homestead where Dr Richard Campbell, a world renowned mango expert is available to share more information and varieties of mango than you can imagine in your wildest mango dreams.

It is part of my Saturday List of Things To Do, as I always love being nourished with incredible history and detail about all foods locally grown and tropical and always walking away with atleast a dozen mango varieties despite our somewhat dismal season due to weather conditions.

Read more about Dr. Campbell's Farm in our May/June news.

Last but not least, congratulations to our local Snail of Approval recipient and farmer
Jorge J. Zaldivar, farmer at PG Tropicals  who was recently appointed to serve on Slow Food USA's Ark of Taste Southeastern Committee. Recently he appeared on a live Facebook Panel “Eating to Extinction” and the Ark of Taste which you can view at:
https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?extid=NS-UNK-UNK-UNK-IOS_GK0T-GK1C&ref=watch_permalink&v=563553428529204

Congratulations Jorge.

Plenty of time to visit our website this summer for a list of our winners, also lots of resources slowfoodmiami.org and our farm list.

Hope to see you on the farms, or late summer for our annual meeting.

And stay tuned, we are going to have a very exciting interview and a taste of an Italian adventure with FIU Professor Archibald Kincaid who is leading 20 students on a 5-week study abroad program called Food, Economy and Society on the Italian Riviera. They are visiting numerous small producers of food and wine, including a visit to Bra and the University of Gastronomic Sciences.

Who wants to go back to school? I'm in!

Until we meet again,

Meet Dr. Richard Campbell
Dr C is a 3rd generation mango grower and world renowned expert on anything mango. And despite the challenging mango season due to climate conditions this year and powder mildew, Richard still has 95 varieties one week or another on his list of available harvests.

Richard believes cultivating your own fruit, sourcing from some of the best farmers here in Homestead and the Redlands is the essence of what Slow Food is all about. We are so blessed to have the conditions available to grow a plethora of food, a kind of insurance policy for food security and food as medicine. Plants give us the vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and bioactives to keep our bodies and minds healthy; critical especially in light of the dreadful viruses running amuck these days.

Take a visit to Dr Campbells farm, meet the family all a part of the mango dynasty. He is a joy to speak with, hang out with and learn from. Thanks Dr. C.

Slow Food planting

Ready to grow your own food this fall? We sure are. Ready-to-Grow has been very busy getting ready for the fall growing season. During the COVID pandemic we have been witnessing an increase in more people planting edible plants at home, wanting more food security as well as something fun to with more time at home.

Our schedule for installing and planting gardens is filling up really quickly for the fall. If anyone would like our help creating a new garden or planting an existing one I recommend reaching out soon.

For those of you that are ready to plant your garden on your own, we have a very full selection of veggie and herb plants right now as well as many other supplies your might need for your organic garden. In an effort to limit crowds at our nursery we haven't scheduled any sales or classes so far this season. If COVID gets more under control later in the season we may reconsider this.

We currently are opening only by appointment at the Ready-to-Grow Garden Center. By being open by appointment our intention is to have little overlap of customers and a safer experience for picking up garden supplies. We also ask that visitors wear masks and maintain distance from others during the visit.

If you'd like to schedule an appointment for pickup, please visit our appointments page.

To see what we have growing this season, feel free to visit our plant selection page. We also have a lot of fruit trees!

 Message from Sean

The school is West Lab at 5300 Camilo Street,  Coral Gables. Planting date is Thursday, February 20th,  2020 starting at 9:00. We should be done by 11:30. Anyone that wants to go can e-mail me so I can organize the volunteers. grovehomes@gmail.com

Sean reported that Slow Foods will have a planting on Nov 16th and 17th from 9:00 – 2:30 at the South Point Elementary school on South Beach.  Please contact Sean at grovehomes@gmail.com  if you are interested in helping out.

Lolly Anderson, Margaret Hoeveler and Sean Reichert were there.  Margaret took all the pictures.  This was a collaboration with Slow Food Miami & Whole Foods Coral Gables & Pinecrest Stores for a National campaign.  This is the first time in over 80 years any type of agriculture has been brought back to Vizcaya.
